Running your own business can always seem like you never have enough time to do anything. Balancing your team, their needs, whilst tracking output can be a nightmare if you don’t have a concrete process in place. The biggest key in time management is prioritisation. By prioritising your work from urgent, to non-urgent, you will then be able to allocate your time more effectively.

Here are 6 top tips to help you manage your time better.

  • Plan ahead

Make sure you start your day with a clear focus on what you would like your outcome to be. Always ask yourself ‘What else am I going to do today to be brilliant’. The best way to plan ahead is to make a habit out of creating a ‘to-do’ list for the next workday. That way you won’t be trying to figure out what you need to do as it is already written down.

  • Organise yourself

For a more long-term approach on time management utilise an online calendar. This way you will be able to get more notifications to remind you of certain events/meetings/tasks. Organising yourself will help keep you focused and staying on track with managing yourself and your team.

  • Remove non-essential tasks

It is important not to focus your time on tasks that will not benefit your business. Figure out what is significant and what deserves your time. Once you remove non-essential tasks you will then have more time to focus on the important tasks which need your full attention.

  • Set a time limit to complete a task

Blocking out time on different tasks will allow you to stay focused and be more efficient. Making the small extra effort to decide on how much time you need to allocate for each task can help you recognise potential problems before they arise. It also helps you understand which tasks are the most important and which tasks are the least important. This will also help with figuring out what your ‘Eat that Frog’ will be for that day.

  • Eat that Frog

Eat the Frog is a phrase which means ‘just do it’. The way it works in the business world is to do the task you are not looking forward to first. This means you will get the task you are dreading straight away out of the way and enjoy the rest of the day. It’s a great tool to use within your team as we all know when you dread a task you push it back, but if you get it done straight away you won’t be dreading it as it’s done.

  • Take breaks between tasks

Always give yourself time out from the screen, no matter how busy your day is. When you do lots of tasks without a break it will mean you lose focus and motivation. Take time out when you have completed your tasks this will help clear your head and refresh yourself.
